 As more advanced cannon designs involving longer, narrower barrels appeared, the need for cannon makers to experiment with alloy composition and casting grew proportionately, and thus the Cannon Foundry was born. With a larger, more efficient blast furnace, the cannon foundry is simply better equipped to produce specific alloy compositions in sizable amounts than the smaller cannon workshops.
